Short Vowel Phonics

Three sets are currently available: Short Vowel Phonics 1, Short Vowel Phonics 2, and the the Short Vowel Phonics Short Stories book.

Features common to both series include:

  • The books complement a systematic phonics curriculum.

  • Vowels are introduced in the following order: a, i, o, u, e (this order is chosen to reduce the difficulties some students have differentiating the short "i" and "e" sound).

  • The vowel sound being introduced is used repetitively through out the story.

  • Each story is followed by a worksheet or worksheets designed to strenghen reading skills.

  • Sight words are limited to: a, as, has, his, is, the.

  • Pictures are specifically planned so as to engage the child without encouraging the child to use the picture to guess how to decode a word.

  • The pictures can be easily colored by the child as a reward for reading the book.

  • Font size was chosen to be easily read by a young child's eyes.

  • The font style, Pen Time Manuscript, was chosen because it closely mimics the handwriting styles most children are taught in penmanship.

  • These positive stories can easily lead to further discussion or study.

  • The books are available in the following formats: paper editons for homeschool and school use; limited license for schools interested in self-printing; and library-quality editions.

Short Vowel Phonics 1 series consists of 10 stories. Each vowel has two stories written using that short vowel with words in the consonent-vowel-consonant pattern (c-v-c pattern or v-c pattern). An example from a short "a" story is: "The cat taps the cap." These stories have 4 to 9 sentences.

Short Vowel Phonics 2 series consists of 16 stories. Each vowel will have at least one story written in the v-c and c-v-c patterns along with one or two stories that include consonant blends and silent consonants. These stories have 6 to 14 sentences.

The Short Vowel Phonics Short Stories series consists of 16 stories in chapter book format. Each vowel will have at least one story written in the v-c and c-v-c patterns along with one or two stories that include consonant blends and silent consonants. These stories have 8 to 20 sentences.
